Bicycles used for carrying children and cargo are becoming more popular. The standard staple racks (27” long) will accommodate most if not all of these bikes, but special consideration must be made for the size of the family/cargo bicycles.
Family and cargo bicycles range in size from 7 to 10 feet in length, and bicycles with cargo bins may be 2 to 3 feet wide. Bicycles with trailers have additional space considerations. For this reason, city development codes should require one out of every twenty bike parking spaces (ten bike racks) in a building to be a standard staple rack with spacing for a family/cargo bike.
The rack should be at least 48” from any wall or other bike rack. The rack should be signed to be specifically for family/cargo bicycles to discourage people with standard diamond-shaped bicycles from using the rack.
